After a well-deserved winter break, January ushers in a spirit of renewal and reinvention. Join us for the 4th Annual Teaching Renewal Week, January 14 – 18, 2019. It is an experience wherein colleagues gather for inspiration, collaboration, and action on a wide variety of teaching for learning goals.
In particular, may I draw your attention to the Design Workshops on January 17 (afternoon) and 18 (morning)? These interactive sessions signal the commencement of a year-long process to catalyze our community imagining a desirable, not default, future for the teaching and learning ecosystem at Mizzou.
Bring your optimisms, skepticisms and pessimisms; your issues, problems and excitements; your conundrums and epiphanies; your best practices, innovations and risks; your successes, partial successes and failures; your experiences and ideas . . .. In this way, together, we will begin evoking the unique constellation of signature programs that the new Teaching for Learning Center would host, facilitate, and/or advance with partners.
Highlights for the 2019 Teaching Renewal Week include:
- a public conversation with Mizzou’s own Earnest Perry, Ashely Woodson, Joseph Erb, and Stephen Brookfield (the John Ireland Endowed Chair at the University of St. Thomas in Minneapolis-St. Paul) on how they aspire to facilitate inclusively excellent learning environments
- an interactive workshop that will help us operationalize inclusive pedagogy in the classroom with Stephen Brookfield
- the kick-off to a year-long Strategic Thinking and Design process for the new Teaching for Learning Center (referenced above)
- an opportunity to engage with Mizzou’s Interactive Theater Troupe, led by Suzanne Burgoyne, as they perform, “Parts of Speech.” This sketch explores the interplay between religious diversity and free speech in a fictitious college course.
- several workshops with ET@MO, the Campus Writing Program, and the Career Center
- Also, featuring workshops by Beth Whitaker on “Understanding the Ecotones of Your Class: Making Every Minute Count,” and Steve Keller and Deborah Huelsbergen, on how to “Rock the First Day”
