Learn more about the Kemper Award, and meet our Kemper Fellows here.

The Excellence in Teaching with Technology Awards recognize excellence in the efforts of faculty, staff, teaching assistants and graduate instructors involved in using educational technologies to meaningfully improve teaching and learning at Mizzou.

FerrisGraduate/Professional Teaching Award

Ferris Pfeiffer, Biomedical, Biological & Chemical Engineering, College of Engineering. Ferris wanted his course to incorporate student choice and autonomy. Using these core values he created a “choose your own adventure” course. Each module used multiple modalities with overlapping content (research articles, textbook, and video) so that students would have choices in how the content was represented. In addition to representing the content creatively, Ferris also allowed students to demonstrate their understanding in multiple ways each week.

Undergraduate Teaching AwardDr. Bean

Jennifer Bean, Nutrition & Exercise Physiology, College of Human Environmental Sciences. Jennifer is aware effective use of educational technology supports intellectual growth and promotes good citizenship online and in the workplace. Technology is not a one-size-fits-all teaching prop, and use without thought of curriculum support or teaching abilities can interfere with the learning process. Jennifer relies on feedback from experts and students to ensure she is providing the right kind of technology use.

GI/TA Teaching Award

Rachel Juergensen, Special Education, College of Education. Rachel has used popular technologies such as bitmoji to illustrate concepts in engaging ways, Google forms and documents to leverage the collaboration capabilities, as well as thoughtfully integrating traditional technologies in meaningful ways in her course. She always has a Universal Design for Learning focus, so her eye is continually looking for barriers and technologies that can be used to reduce barriers in her classroom.

Greg Rotert, School of Natural Resources, College of Agriculture, Food & Natural Resources. Because Greg knows the basics and can make anything work all the time, it allows others to become more unique and creative. It is also unique and creative on some level that Greg helps explain all of the new software/hardware to us so that it can work. He has a way to help us without making any of us feel inadequate.

The Campus Writing Program awarded Robin Rotman, Assistant Professor in the School of Natural Resources, the Win Horner Award for Innovative Writing Intensive Teaching for the 2019-2020 academic year. Inspired by early CWP director Win Horner, this award celebrates innovative approaches to teaching writing in the disciplines. In her Environmental Science 4400W course, Professor Rotman mentors students through complex legal writing, and, by the conclusion of each semester, her students create their own Journal of Environmental Law, Policy, and Justice. Through her mentorship and dedication to teaching with writing, Professor Rotman embodies the legacy of Dr. Win Horner.

The Campus Writing Program awarded Dr. Laurie Kingsley, Teaching Professor in the College of Education, the Win Horner Award for Innovative Writing Intensive Teaching for the 2019-2020 academic year. Inspired by early CWP director Win Horner, this award celebrates innovative approaches to teaching writing in the disciplines. In her courses, Dr. Kingsley designs engaging lessons to encourage students both to write to learn disciplinary content and to learn to write as educators. Furthermore, she inspires these emerging teachers to consider innovative ways to use writing in their own future classrooms, furthering the legacy of Dr. Win Horner.

The Campus Writing Program awarded Cydni Robertson, Graduate Teaching Assistant in Textile and Apparel Management, the Writing Intensive Excellence Award for the 2019-2020 academic year. As a teaching assistant in a Writing Intensive class, Cydni has been a constant support to her students who remark that she has helped them improve their writing skills and inspired their creativity.
